Teaching for Change

FREE resources for teachers, by Howard Zinn, from zinnedproject.org

Thanks to an anonymous donor (a former student of Howard Zinn's) Rethinking Schools and Teaching for Change are offering a limited number of free "Zinn Education Packets" for middle and high school teachers and teacher educators.

History is often written by and focused on "the winners" and overlooks the vast majority of those who lived it. Howard Zinn has spent a lifetime trying to bring balance to our understanding of history so we can learn from it and make positive change.

Professor Zinn couples his academic observations with a call for action. While teaching at Spelman College in Atlanta, he became embroiled in the emerging civil rights struggle and then became a national leader in the anti-Vietnam War movement.

His book, A People's History of the United States, is one of the most popular history texts, with more than 1.7 million copies in print. Many have praised this work, but perhaps Bruce Springsteen put it best:

"Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States had an enormous impact on me. It set me down in a place that I recognized and felt I had a claim to. It made me feel that I was a player in this moment in history, as we all are, and that this moment in history was mine, somehow, to do with whatever I could. It gave me a sense of myself in the context of this huge American experience ..."

If you are a middle or high school teacher, or teacher educator, you are invited as a friend of Voices of a People's History and howardzinn.org to apply to receive a free Zinn Education Project packet. (All others are welcome to visit zinnedproject.org for information about the project and a free downloadable version of the teaching guide.)

The packets (a $60 plus value) include one copy each of:

A People's History of the United States, the classic text by Howard Zinn.

A People's History for the Classroom, by Rethinking Schools editor Bill Bigelow. This teaching guide includes an introductory essay, "A People's History, A People's Pedagogy," linking Howard Zinn's approach to history with a more critical, participatory teaching methodology; and features a sampling of role plays and activities from Rethinking Schools books.

"Howard Zinn: You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train" by Deb Ellis and Denis Mueller, a DVD documentary about the life of Howard Zinn, from First Run Features.

To download the teaching guide or request a free packet, visit zinnedproject.org and select Packet Request.

Be sure to enter this key code: ZVPH

While online, you can also find additional resources for teaching U.S. history from a "people's history" perspective and view a clip from "Howard Zinn: You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train."

In addition, donations can be made at zinnedproject.org to increase the number of free packets for teachers. The funder for this project will match donations dollar for dollar.
